Specialized Diagnostics: Immunohistochemistry

This technique depends on the detection of parasite antigens, usually in histological sections of host tissue, using specific antibodies.

Overview

This technique depends on the detection of parasite antigens, usually in histological sections of host tissue, using specific antibodies. It is used primarily for protozoa (e.g. Toxoplasma gondii or Neospora caninum tissue cysts) which may be difficult to detect using traditional histological staining methods. It can also be used to measure the sensitivity and specificity of testing for Cysticercus bovis (Taenia saginata) in the tissues of cattle.
