Public health overview

Rarely, human infections with Alaria have been reported, presumably following ingestion of raw or inadequately cooked frogs. One human case of Alaria in northern Ontario – associated with a large number of immature flukes in most organs - was fatal.

Occasionally, Alaria mesocercariae have been recovered from the eyes of people, including one probable case in Saskatchewan in 2005.

More information about Alaria is available under Dogs .
