Public health overview

As well as Cheyletiella, and Sarcoptes, and Notoedres , there are many other mite parasites of animals and birds that will also infest people, sometimes causing significant clinical problems but not establishing on the accidental human hosts.  The most important of these zoonotic mites in Canada, and in other parts of the world, are likely species of Ornithonyssus and Dermanyssus from domestic and free-ranging birds, and Trixacarus caviae from guinea-pigs.  Cleaning out an infested chicken house is a good way to acquire the bird mites.
