Western College of Veterinary Medicine

Equine Veterinarian Position

We are looking for an equine vet to start at their soonest availability at Elm Creek Equine Vet Services, located near Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Elm Creek Equine is a 3-vet equine practice serving southern Manitoba from two locations.

We are a rapidly expanding, family friendly clinic that takes great pride in fostering a positive culture in our clinic and a sense of community with our clients. We believe in work life balance and are working hard to make equine practice a sustainable and enjoyable career (even for a team of vet-moms!).

We offer pretty much all the things (DR, ultrasound, gastroscopy, upper airway endoscopy, oroscopy, power dentistry, all the extraction instruments, therapeutic laser, shockwave, in clinic CBC/Chem, stall-side diagnostics, everything needed for mare and stallion services (including embryo transfer), and in-house recipient herd, etc. If we don't have it and you want it, we can probably get it! For any residency trained or boarded vets, we are very open to investing further in our practice and facility to make something that works for your specialty.

We have stocked vehicles and provide assistants for our vets. We work with our associates in finding them a suitable assistant and are open to hiring either RVTs or knowledgeable equine handlers.

We provide AAEP memberships and pay association fees (CVMA and MVMA).

We pay a very competitive salary ($90,000 plus production for vets ready to step into practice, and an accelerated internship program starting at $70,000 for vets requiring maximal mentorship). We offer above industry standard CE allowance (new grads offered up to $8,000/year in CE).

We have an extremely variable caseload with room to focus and grow in any area of equine practice. We have excellent staff retention; both of our current associates are previous summer students and many of our students report that they enjoyed being in our practice as our client-base is made up of wonderful people. Manitoba really has an amazing and incredibly diverse equine community.

We are well respected for providing excellent reproduction service, dentistry service, and racetrack service (regulatory service for Thoroughbreds and treatment service for Standardbreds). We are rapidly growing our sport horse division.

We have two locations - our primary location is a 13-stall facility spread over Dr. Dobson's farm. This location is an inspected veterinary facility and is home to our reproduction and rehabilitation service, as well as providing some hospitalization and haul in service.

Our newest location is a 2-stall facility in Oakbank, which is beautifully designed in a brand-new building for hospitalization and haul in appointments.

Each facility is supported by a dedicated manager as well as dedicated support staff.

We are open to many different options for employment within our practice- we mainly need help for the upcoming breeding and racing season, beginning mid March and concluding end of September.

This position could be filled by a competent new grad; extensive mentorship is available. This position could be either for short term (6-12 months) or long-term placement.

We are also very open to hiring an internship or residency trained vet. Our clinic can support a theriogenologist, internist, surgeon, or Equine practitioner. We would love to hear from some board-certified specialists about building their dream career within our practice.

Salary offerings are negotiable and will be adjusted appropriately for any additional training or certifications. Overall compensation will be significantly increased for any vets looking for a short-term placement over our peak season (spring to fall) and not looking to continue employment throught the winter months. We have options including work placements in the US for vets looking to travel and continue at peak-level practice during "busy seasons" in multiple geographical regions.

Our qualifications are quite simple- you must be eligible for an unrestricted vet license in Manitoba and have a valid drivers license.

Otherwise, we need someone who shares our vision (challenging the standards of equine practice), our core values (passionate in our career, excellence in care and communication, learning and evolving, and always practicing with integrity). We need someone who has an easy smile and can connect with our clients in a meaningful way.

If you have questions or would like to discuss how you would fit within our clinic, please reach out to Dr. Gillian Dobson at (204) 750-0737 (text or phone call) or by email at gilliandobson@elmcreekequine.com

We welcome anyone interested to check out our website at www.elmcreekequine.com or our social media pages @elmcreekequine and check out who we are and what we do!
