The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is responsible for the production, marketing, processing and merchandising of agriculture and aquaculture products, and food security. The Office of the Chief Veterinarian (OCV) supports the sustainability of animal and plant agriculture, while serving to protect the well-being of the people of the province through surveillance, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and the development of strategies to mitigate identified risks. The OCV works closely with other Ministry of Agriculture and Food branches, including the Plant and Animal Health Branch.
As a Welfare, Extension and Emergency Management Veterinarian, you will report directly to the Chief Veterinarian and provide leadership in the specialized field of animal welfare, animal welfare and health extension, including welfare management in emergency responses. Qualifications for this role include:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or equivalent
  • Must be licensed to practice by the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia, or immediately eligible for licensing.
  • Postgraduate training to the Master’s, PhD, Board Certification or equivalent, with a preference for a postgraduate degree in animal welfare, and three (3) years of veterinary experience in population medicine, extension or welfare; OR, seven (7) years of experience as a practicing veterinarian in population medicine and welfare.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a leadership and supervisory role; preference may be given for five (5) or more years.
  • A valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
  • Willing and able to:
  • Work on-call including extended hours during emergency activations.
  • Participate in operational deployments throughout western Canada.
