Research Area(s)
Darian’s research involves identifying and validating the hormones cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) as biomarkers of welfare in swine. This is being evaluated by measuring the levels of these hormones in the hair and saliva, and comparing their concentrations to behavioural indicators of welfare such as feeding behaviour, aggression, and physical health concerns. If successful, the results will provide the industry and scientific community with an objective, and non-invasive measurement of welfare in swine
