Profile

Dr. Jose Antonio Guerra brings over 15 years of diverse academic and clinical experience to the WCVM's Large Animal Surgery service. He earned both his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Sciences degrees with honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His career began at UNAM’s Equine Teaching Hospital, where he advanced from volunteer, intern to teaching assistant. He later served as a full-time professor and Large Animal Hospital Director at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM) from 2015 to 2018.

In 2018, Dr. Guerra relocated to Canada to pursue advanced clinical training, completing a rotating large animal internship at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), University of Guelph, followed by a residency in Large Animal Surgery and a second Master of Science degree at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), University of Saskatchewan.

From 2023 to 2025, he worked as a Large Animal Surgeon and assistant professor at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island. As of October 1, 2025, Dr. Guerra has rejoined WCVM as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, contributing to both clinical teaching and surgical services.

Research Interests

Dr. Guerra’s research focuses on applied clinical topics in large animal surgery. His primary areas of interest include equine regional anesthesia and pain management, advanced equine dental extractions, and the development of surgical techniques in small ruminants and pigs—species that are seeing increasing clinical attention.
