Bio Summary

Dr. Francini Klaumann is a Brazilian-trained veterinarian who earned her DVM (2011) and MSc (2014) degrees from Santa Catarina State University, Brazil, and her PhD (2018) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain.

Her doctoral research focused on porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) in domestic pigs and wild boar. She has extensive experience in swine health and applied research, having worked with BRF in Brazil and HyLife in Canada.

Dr. Klaumann currently works at Demeter Veterinary Services in Ontario and is pursuing advanced training in swine health management through the ABVP Swine Health Management Residency/SMART program. Her professional interests include swine infectious diseases, herd health, disease prevention and the application of scientific evidence to practical challenges in the swine industry. Her focus is on improving diagnostic approaches and health management strategies.

Research Area(s)

Her research focuses on antimicrobial use and antimicrobial stewardship in swine production, particularly in nursery and finisher pigs. Her work aims to quantify antimicrobial consumption, characterize usage patterns across production cycles, batches, and source companies, and investigate associations between antibiotic use and factors such as body weight, clinical signs, genetics, and season.

She is also interested in evaluating whether antimicrobial use aligns with responsible use guidelines and assessing the feasibility of predicting batch-level antimicrobial consumption using limited sampling periods. Her research integrates veterinary epidemiology, quantitative analysis, and antimicrobial use surveillance to support evidence-based decision-making and promote responsible antimicrobial use in swine production.
