Research

Ozone exposure triggers neutrophilic lung inflammation and can compromise the alveolar–capillary barrier, impairing pulmonary function. My research investigates how mitochondrial ATP synthase and its inhibitor ATP synthase inhibitory factor 1 (IF1) regulates mitochondrial bioenergetics and ATP signalling to influence neutrophil recruitment, activation, and inflammatory lung injury. Experimental approaches integrate cellular and molecular assays with intravital lung microscopy and synchrotron-based imaging to examine neutrophil behaviour, alveolar barrier integrity, and alveolar contractile dynamics. The overall objective is to elucidate the mechanisms linking cellular energy metabolism to ozone-induced lung inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and tissue recovery, providing a foundation for identifying potential therapeutic targets.
