Dr. Toy's research focuses include:

• The cardiorespiratory effects of differing sedation protocols before isoflurane anesthesia in healthy rabbits. 
• The effect of preanesthetic fasting on arterial oxygen tension and lung ventilation distribution assessed using electrical impedance tomography in anesthetized horses.

After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Shannon Toy attended the University of Saskatchewan where she completed a one-year clinical internship in zoological, exotic and wildlife medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). After completing her graduate certificate program, she worked as a veterinarian at the Calgary Humane Society.

Dr. Toy then started an internship at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and subsequently completed a two-year fellowship at the same institution. Dr. Toy has a special interest in anesthesia and analgesia of all species.
