Spectrophotometers

We have two NanoDrop UV/Vis spectrophotometers in our laboratory: the ND-2000c and the NanoDrop One. They are full spectrum (220-750 nm and 190 nm-840 nm respectively) spectrophotometers that are able to quantify/qualify DNA, RNA and protein in samples as small as 1 ul with high accuracy and reproducibility.

NanoDrop utilizes a patented sample retention technology that employs surface tension alone to hold the sample in place between two optical fibers. This eliminates the need for cuvettes and other sample containment devices and allows for clean up in seconds. In addition, the NanoDrop has the capability to measure highly concentrated samples without dilution (50X and 200X respectively higher concentration than the samples measured by a standard cuvette spectrophotometer).

The small sample requirement and ease of use make the NanoDrop Spectrophotometers ideal for measuring:

  • Nucleic acid concentration and purity up to 3700 ng/ul without dilution
  • Fluorescent dye labeling density of nucleic acid microarray samples
  • Purified protein analysis up to 100 mg/ml
  • Bradford, BCA and Lowry Assay analysis of proteins
  • Cell density measurements
  • General UV/Vis spectrophotometry

This instrument is an ergonomic, standalone spectrophotometer with high-resolution, touch screen interface.

It is capable of providing you with early identification of contaminants, which can prevent failure of downstream applications and save days of troubleshooting. When common contaminants are detected, the software will alert you then provide you with a corrected concentration.

NanoDrop-2000C

The NanoDrop 2000c spectrophotometer offers the convenience of both the NanoDrop patented sample retention technology as well as a traditional cuvette for sample measurements. It will accept 10 mm cuvettes up to 48 mm tall.

Here are some other specifications about this device:

  • Measures 0.5-2 ul samples using sample retention technology, which uses surface tension to hold the sample in place between two optical fibers
  • Measures highly concentrated samples without the need for dilutions from 190 to 840 nm
  • Capable of using traditional cuvettes for sample measurement
