INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Duties for the food animal theriogenology service during regular hospital hours include but are not limited to the intern assisting with or performing semen collection and analysis, semen cryopreservation, pregnancy examination, management of dystocia and sick postpartum animals, sub and infertility examinations, ovum pickup, embryo transfer, neonatal management, and reproductive ultrasound procedures. Some work with other species is also expected.
In the case of an intern opting to rotate through other services for night duty, the expectations for night duty are that the intern, independently or with a registered veterinary technologist (RVT) and/or with 4th year DVM rotation students, completes treatment of all large animal in-patients; to provide patient assessments; to conduct veterinary procedures that an RVT or student cannot do; and to assist or manage (depending on level of competency) new emergency admissions. The objectives of night duty include: to provide a clinical environment where interns can practice independently and apply their skills and knowledge, although a supervising clinician will always be available; to provide a varied clinical experience throughout the internship program with exposure to a diverse caseload; to provide increased opportunities for developing and practicing technical competence; to enable the practicing of communication skills.
The Food Animal Theriogenology Service at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, provides advanced training that produces trainees (i.e., interns and residents) with the knowledge, skills, and aptitudes necessary to practise advanced food animal theriogenology, according to the standards of the profession as outlined by the SVMA/CVMA (interns) and by the ACT (residents), respectively.
